Very likely my favorite album of all time. Marks death inspired my first Substack post (would love you to peek at it). Was lucky to see him around 15 times, a couple with the Screaming Trees, QSA, gutter Twins, but mostly solo. Every note was perfection every single time.

His memoir is so good. It's better than binging watching a show on Netflix.

The Screaming Trees were always my favorites, but as good as I thought they were—on reflection, they were quite one-dimensional, and Mark needed more. His solo albums are incredible, and there are at least 7 or 8, which are amongst my favorite records I own. His final album, 'Straight Songs of Sorrow,' was also the soundtrack to my wife and I's lockdown in 2020.

I've met him, and he was incredibly kind and unassuming. I've also seen him many times live, never a showman, but you couldn't take your eyes off him. And...that voice! I will say Lanegan had the greatest male voice of my generation. Hands down.

Several months ago, I wrote an article about how his death was a gut punch, and I still miss him greatly.

What an amazing article! I read it in one breath! Thank you so much for it. About six months ago, I was listening to a lot of Lanegan, and even though I’ve been listening to grunge for as long as I can remember, this artist remained somewhat on the sidelines. But after diving deep into his work, I realized that he is probably the most soulful poet and singer of that generation. His version of Alice in Chains’ Nutshell always gives me chills. Thanks again for this article. And just yesterday, I mentioned him in my article about Earth.

Great piece - I've always felt like Lanegan has such an otherworldly presence. I remember buying a Screaming Trees album blindly in my teens and falling in love with the contrast between Lanegan's deep, lullaby melodies and the music that swirled around him. Lanegan's influence can't be understated - though I do feel sorry he doesn't seem to have received the same public accolades some of those who were so heavily influenced by him have received!

Thank you for reading and sharing how you got introduced to Lanegan ! I agree, I do think often the best artists with strong individualism get overlooked- they always stay true to themselves and don’t change for no one. 🙏🫶🏻
